March Testing:

Testing began for the 2011 car in March where the team made use of 4 test days to record data and let the drivers get a feel for the new car. The test were ran in Pembrey where glorious sunshine allowed dry test days to get good information on the tyres and balance of the car. Straight-line and slalom tests were carried out and changes were made to alter and improve the handling.

There is still more work to be done and, after the Easter break, the team will be working hard before the next tests to ensure more smooth running and positive results. Check back for updates.

Optimistic progress:

Last year’s performance was very good, having the fastest accelerating car from all of the UK teams and finishing 12th overall in the world. The standard of the some of the competitors was very high and some of the teams had much larger budgets meaning the results for SMU were certainly a delight.

2011 is an exciting year for the SMU team because the new car is the most advanced yet. New engineering developments show improvements in many different areas. The students have been working very hard over the past months bringing new and exciting designs. Carbon fibre development has been undertaken meaning more carbon fibre parts will be used on the car helping to reduce the overall weight and improve aerodynamics. There has also been some successful tyre development seeing a change to wider tyres which will improve the car’s handling.
